But the real challenge, as we’ve read, is the descent. There are trails that go down the crater’s slope to the very edge of Hule Lagoon. The reviews are clear: it’s a demanding hike, often with a lot of mud, roots, and natural steps. A paradise for adventure seekers!
2. Kayaking on Volcanic Waters We’ve confirmed that one of the most incredible experiences is the possibility of renting kayaks and paddling on the main lagoon. The idea of being in the middle of a crater, paddling over deep, calm waters, surrounded by primary forest, sounds simply unreal.

- How to get there? Access is via Bajos del Toro or Vara Blanca; we recommend arriving at Mirador Tinamú. The road on the way is gravel, but a car can enter slowly. However, a 4×4 vehicle is highly recommended, and almost indispensable in the rainy season. The road down to the lagoon is temporarily suspended for vehicles, so to get to the bottom, you must hike.
- What to bring? The list is clear: waterproof hiking shoes (mud is the protagonist). Trekking poles (a great tip!), a waterproof layer or poncho, plenty of water, snacks, and insect repellent.
- Costs and Facilities? We investigated and found that you pay a parking fee on the private property that provides access. Prices seem to vary, so it’s good to bring cash (colones). There is a restaurant with a varied menu, but it’s best to go prepared with everything you need.
- Difficulty? Moderate for the viewpoints; difficult if you decide to hike down to the lagoon.

Do I really need a 4×4 to get there? Our recommendation is yes. Although you can enter with a 4×2 in the dry summer, it’s not worth the risk in winter. To ensure a stress-free experience, we 100% recommend a 4×4.
How long is the hike? It depends on your physical condition and how much you explore. Most reviews suggest between 2 and 4 hours in total, especially if you hike down to the lagoon’s shore and back up.
Is this outing suitable for children or pets? From what we’ve read, it’s a high-demand physical outing. It’s probably not recommended for very young children due to the mud and steep slopes. We have seen reports of people bringing pets (dogs), but it must be at your own risk and considering the terrain’s difficulty.
Is there anywhere to eat at Hule Lagoon? Facilities are very limited. There is a small “soda” (local restaurant) at the entrance, but it’s best to confirm if it’s open. Our recommendation is to bring your own snacks, sandwiches, and enough water for the whole adventure.
How far is Hule Lagoon from Oasis Mountain? It’s the perfect day trip. The drive can take about 1 hour. It’s ideal to leave our suites early, enjoy the full day at the lagoon, and be back for sunset.
